Care Awards 2024

The WMCA 2024 Excellence in Care Awards is now open for nominations!


These awards are open to all Care Association members and you will have until Friday 19th July 2024 to nominate

Each winner receives an engraved trophy and £500 in cash.


Anyone who nominates will also be entered in to a prize draw for one of 5 x £100 Amazon vouchers!


Categories are (Nominations must be no more than 500 words and the nomination must demonstrate at least one of the nomination criteria):

Excellence in Care Award - Carer


This award recognises the significant role of the Care Worker in consistently providing a high quality standard, for service users. Evidence of dedication, awareness of colleagues and career development through training will be important elements for the judges.


Nomination Criteria:


  • Evidence of providing an excellent service to clients
  • Evidence of understanding and demonstrating treating each person as an individual by giving a personalised service
  • Evidence of helping people to be more independent wherever possible
  • Respects people’s right to privacy and dignity (example)
  • Involves service users and their families in the development of care
  • Has examples of putting in extra effort for service users – ‘going the extra mile’
  • Is aware of personal development, and looks for opportunities to absorb knowledge and skills. For example: training courses of all types, reading guidance and good practice guides, using toolkits, shadowing, attending workshops and study days, using e-learning.
  • Evidence of working effectively as part of a team and also with own initiative

Excellence in Care Award - Registered Manager


Award Sponsor: Spectrum Care Ltd


This award will be given to the Registered Manager who has demonstrated a high level of expertise together with exceptional skills in managing the complex business of running a care business. A Manager who shows vision in developing person centred care and supporting staff to meet the ever changing needs of the service users.


Nomination Criteria:


  • Can show how the service is “Well Led”
  • Demonstrates their commitment to good practice in person centred care and support
  • Demonstrates an understanding of equality, diversity and inclusion
  • Can demonstrate satisfaction from service users
  • Can demonstrate supporting staff effectively through CPD, understanding of staff wellbeing, empowerment and freedom for staff to 'speak up'
  • Can demonstrate commitment to personal CPD
  • Can demonstrate effective work with partners and in the community 

Excellence in Care Award - Deputy/Senior/Team Leader


Award Sponsor: Jobchange

This candidate has shown clear commitment to improving the delivery of care and support within their team. A person who has shown leadership qualities by reflecting on what could be better and supporting others to bring about change.


Nomination Criteria:


  • Can show how the service is “Well Led”
  • Demonstrates their commitment to good practice in person centred care and support
  • Demonstrates an understanding of equality, diversity and inclusion
  • Can demonstrate satisfaction from service users
  • Can demonstrate supporting staff effectively through CPD, understanding of staff wellbeing, empowerment and freedom for staff to 'speak up'
  • Can demonstrate commitment to personal CPD 
  • Can demonstrate effective work with partners and in the community

Excellence in Care Awards - Apprentice


Award Sponsor: Realise Training


Nomination Criteria:


This award is for an Apprentice who has made a real difference in the workplace and can provide evidence of how they have supported the wider team to improve performance, through initiative and an outstanding work ethic.


Excellence in Care Awards - Activity Coordinator


This award will be given to Actvity Coordinator who has demonstrated they can provide a ‘needs led’, varied and appropriate programme for care home residents. Organisers who show exceptional skills, creativity and responsibilities in arranging activities either alone or in conjunction with a senior.


Nomination Criteria:


  • Understands individuals needs for different types of activities
  • Explains where they source their knowledge and training from and why e.g. Alzheimers Society, Stroke Society, Deaf/Blind etc.
  • Is able to demonstrate how clients and/or relatives/carers participate in the development of new activities
  • Is aware of how to motivate people
  • Inclusion for people with a range of mental and physical disabilities (E.g. music)
  • Gives examples of how they have succeeded where others have not
  • Examples of how residents have benefited

Excellence in Care Awards - Domestic Staff (e.g Cleaners, Cooks, Maintenance)


This award will recognise an excellent, person centred 

service to clients, demonstrating dignity and respect through domestic services.Candidates should be able to provide examples of initiatives and excellence in their work and pride themselves on outstanding client feedback.


Nomination Criteria:


  • Gives an excellent service to clients
  • Understands and demonstrates treating each person as an individual
  • Shows respect to clients and treats them with dignity
  • Can demonstrate excellence in their job (how)
  • Uses initiative (example)
  • Takes special pride in their work
  • Has received praise from clients

Excellence in Care Awards - Office Staff (HR, Admin, Receptionist)

Candidates can demonstrate evidence of providing excellent client facing services that supports the reputation and performance of the business. 


Nomination Criteria:


  • Gives an excellent service to clients
  • Understands and demonstrates treating each person as an individual
  • Shows respect to clients and treats them with dignity
  • Can demonstrate excellence in their job (how)
  • Uses initiative (example)
  • Takes special pride in their work
  • Has received praise from clients

Excellence in Care Awards - Director/Owner


Award Sponsor: Citation Ltd


This candidate can demonstrate how they have created an excellent work environment, where staff can flourish through the opportunities the business provides. Candidates can demonstrate how they have implemented a new idea that has improved the standard of care in their business.


Nomination Criteria:


  • Evidence of staff feeling valued and respected in their roles
  • Evidence of working effectively with partners and in the community
  • Evidence of an environmental strategy in place for the business
  • Taking new approaches to make a successful care business

Excellence in Care Awards - Outstanding Contribution to Care


This special award is in the gif of the Association and is not open for nominations This will be awarded to a person who has made a long-term outstanding contribution to social care.


How to Enter:



  • Entry is open to WMCA Members only
  • Choose the Awards category or categories you wish to nominate someone for and read the judging criteria and rules carefully.
  • Complete the online nomination form
  • Entrants cannot nominate themselves and may be nominated by colleagues, managers, employers or service users/residents.
  • We only need one nomination form per organisation
  • All awards cover both residential and community support services who support vulnerable adults and children in the West Midlands Care Association Area (Herefordshire, Warwickshire, West Midlands and Worcestershire)

 

What Happens Next?


  • Nominations will be shortlisted after the closing date Friday 19 July 2024
  • The awards will be judged by a panel of independent experts. The process will be facilitated by the West Midlands Care Association (WMCA) The panel will select the finalists and everyone will be notified by w/c 5th August 2024
  • A list of finalists will be posted on the WMCA website and Facebook Page.
  • Individual finalists will be expected to attend the Award Ceremony on Friday 25th October from 6:30pm at the Copthorne Hotel, The Waterfront, Level Street, Brierley Hill DY5 1UR
  • Winners will receive an engraved award and £500 cash prize. All finalists will receive a certificate
  • The judges decision is final
